Tool Training: 3D Printers (Level 1) is an introductory, hands-on machine training designed to certify members to safely and responsibly use 3D printers in the makerspace. This class fulfills the requirements for the 3D Printer Level 1 Badge, focusing on safety, software preparation, and supervised printing.
What You’ll Learn
With guidance from a certified instructor, participants will complete all Level 1 competencies, including:
Safety & Lab Policy
- Review and pass a safety quiz covering hot surfaces, moving parts, and ventilation
- Identify the main power switch for the printer and workstation
- Learn fire safety protocol, including the “Kill (main power) and Call (supervisor)” response
Machine Orientation
- Complete a hands-on orientation with a certified instructor
- Identify and explain the basic parts of a 3D printer
Slicer Software & Basic Slicing
- Import a pre-approved STL file into the designated slicer software
- Select the correct printer profile, verify filament type, and generate g-code for a simple print
Print Initiation & Completion
- Load g-code via network or SD card
- Locate the file on the printer interface and start a print under supervision
- Complete one supervised print and safely remove it from the build plate using provided tools
Badge & Access
Participants who successfully complete all requirements earn the 3D Printer Level 1 Badge, which certifies them for supervised use of the 3D printers. This badge is the prerequisite for Level 2 3D Printer Training, which focuses on independent operation and basic troubleshooting.
Who Should Attend
- Individuals 16 years and older
- Youth ages 8–15 must be accompanied by an adult
No prior 3D printing experience is required.

This class is part of our Machine Training Program, designed to build a community of skilled users who can use makerspace equipment responsibly and independently through a structured, level-based badging system. Level 1 trainings serve as the foundation for advanced machine access and skill development.
